Eagles are NFC Champs! No more 300+ passing yards for QBs?

... and the crowd goes wild! Philadelphia streets light up with crowds bustling like it's Black Friday at Mardi Gras and Broad Street looked different.

An Eagles fan reading Inner Excellence on a light pole you say? hmm... unfamiliar.

What's that? Eagles fans on top of bus shelters? I don't remember Broad Street having Eagles Fans on Bus Shelters... BUT if that was broad street then I can only think of one occasion that would spark those ideas... AND I LOVE IT!

Man, what a game!!!

The Eagles came out on top stomping the Commanders 55-24

Now I had faith that my Eagles would come out on top, but never in a million years did I expect on the first play, of our first drive, that we would run the ball down their throats for a Touchdown. JESUS! I mean they knew it was coming and they couldn't stop it. Ah, I love this team!

Saquon Barkley demoralized the Commanders on the first play with his power and grit!

Jalen Hurts lazered the pigskin to Brown for hefty gains with a 31-yard dime to Brown for the toe-tap.

And Honorable mention Quinyon Mitchell with the INT in the endzone over Terry, not so scary, McLaurin.

It was a great game but that isn't the point of this article.

-----------------------------------

The unflappable Jalen Hurts has received a lot of criticism as of late for his lack of production in the passing game, and yes, yours truly was in that crowd of critics with the exhaustive yammering of "Throw the ball already!".

I know. I know... I put the word out already to kill the noise... we have a reddit group... ...

20-28
246 yds
1 TD
0 Int

Needless to say, he left a game that was bittersweet.

But that isn't the point!

Here is the point.

Throughout the last decade and a half we have witnessed the Quarterbacks that are coming out of college are duel-threat QBs. No longer are we watching QBs who are pure pocket passers with a 40 time of 5 seconds and some change. We are in a New Age now. They can pass and run.

Every freaking quarterback can RUN! Hell, I remember when there was only a small selection of Quarterbacks that were duel threats; Vick, McNabb, and Culpepper to name a few, but everyone else was a pocket passer.

Manning wasn't a duel threat. I never heard a tale out of school saying "Hey! Watch out for Peyton Manning! He can get the first down with his legs.". Now, I'm sure no defensive coordinator ever briefed his team with those words. As the matter of fact, if he did, he was garuanteed to get the back of someone's hand to his face for uttering such nonsense.

If you ask me, it's the modernity of the game. It's bound to evolve and become more and more skilled ushering in a new age of players that have abilities and skills that surpass those before them. Skills such as: The Duel Threat Quarterback.

And Jalen Hurts is one of those.

Hurt's critique for his low passing yards in the regular season is not unfounded though. Wait! Hear me out, I mean... he has had games with few passing yards. This is undisputable. BUT YET, they still win! They made it to the Super Bowl despite the passing yards he has had which leads me to this thought -

- Maybe the Eagles have found something here. Maybe they have come to the realization, whether through film study or analytics, that the most important part of winning a game is about not turning the ball over.

I mean just look at how conservative he is with his passing. He takes his time and only makes safe decisions. You would do that if your focus was not turning the ball over.

Hurts has 1 INT since week 4 of this 2024 season. 1 INT! And 4 INT's in the first 3 weeks. So, something happened, someone saw something, then perhaps a conversation or two happened about a gameplan.

Look, by simple logic, the more possessions a team has the bigger the chance they have to score. Therefore, reducing an opponents amount of posessions per game can increase your odds of winning. And how can you make sure don't give the ball to the other team? By not taking any unneccessary risks. This explains why Hurt's takes a considerable amount of time in the pocket for his reads. He wants to ensure that he has a clearly open target or a target that he is sure he can get the ball to.

And guess what? The formula appears to work. Passing Attempts * 0.5 = Turnovers. That's a bad formula but you get the point.

This has me thinking... when will other teams notice and attempt to implement this same gameplan? And not only that but can they?

I mean it seems you also have to have the right personnel for this to work because the players the Eagles have on offense make them a triple threat. Jalen is the true duel-threat because he can run it and he can pass to 2 of the best weapons in Today's NFL, not 1 but 2 (AJ and Smitty). Culpepper only had Randy Moss. Vick only had Julio Jones.

And if that isn't enough, standing right beside him is none other than the best running back in the league. Vick and Culpepper didn't have that either.

I don't think people really realize what is happening here. This is a turning point in the evolution of the Quarterback. This is a turning point for gameplans, for offenses.

I believe we will begin to see Quarterbacks with less passing yards than years before because that means less turnovers.

Now, this makes sense. It is all part of the plan for hurts to throw for less yards. I remember a Press Conference from early in the regular season where Hurts uttered "...stick to the script...". I think the Eagles have proven that this gameplan works. And they will put a stamp on it in 2 weeks.
